How many times have we seen it? ‘We don’t use sub-contractors’ or ‘We only use our own employees’ as though it was a new religion. Let’s have a closer look at this.
There have been many times when an installation hasn’t been quite what someone expected and the blame has been laid at the door of the sub-contractor myth. ‘Make sure you only get employees and you’ll be right’… Hmm… maybe…
The truth is this… really good employees can earn better money by becoming sub-contractors instead of staying ‘on the books’. As an employee you’ll struggle to get past $35 per hour but as a ‘subbie’ you can hit $50+ pretty easily… There are downsides for sure… no paid holidays, no sick pay and you’re only as good as your last job… crucially, if you mess up you fix for free in your own time… a subbie won’t want to make that mistake often I can assure you…! Employers can be very hard and mistakes can leave you with plenty of spare time to reflect wistfully about that nice secure job you left to pursue your dream.
A typical subbie is older and wiser. He’s done his time in trade and then some. He’s had lots of experience with builders and the general public. He knows what he’s doing and what it takes to leave a happy satisfied customer behind.
Some companies sub-contact the whole job out and this is where problems can arise. Any sub-contractors used by Peninsula Air Conditioning work as part of our team and generally alongside our own employees. If a problem arrises where a sub-contractor has completed work, and for whatever reason there’s a problem, then we make sure that the this is sorted promptly. We typically use sub-contractors for electrical and gas connections which require specialist skills and licences.
So next time you wonder about sub-contractors being a part of a business you’re considering dealing with… don’t worry too much. If they look the part, take the lead and talk sense you’ve got absolutely nothing to worry about.
